Camps AND EXCURSIONS
Bass Coast College offers a wide range of experiences outside the classroom. Our camps program facilitates a positive community experience for students, creating social development while engaging in learning in a fun filled educational environment.
An important focus for BCC in Term 1 is to help our Year 7 students enjoy a smooth transition from Primary to Secondary school. As part of this aim, we hold an excellent camp at Phillip Island Adventure Resort in March. The activities the students undertake at this three day camp, have a strong educational, social, and cooperative focus and involve skills that are relevant to a secondary school setting.
Students participate in camp activities with other studentsfrom their own home group, allowing for solid friendships and associations to develop. The camp also allows students and Year 7 teachers to interact positively in a non-school environment, and this can set ip good workng realationships for the remainder of the year.
Students in Year 9 finish off the year with a week of amazing activities. While not an overnight camp, students will spend the week being bused to Melbourne to attend Luna Park and Gravity Zone and participate in the ‘Melbourne Amazing Race’. The week is finished off with the farewell formal event ‘The Bridge’.
Year 12 students attend a four day tertiary Camp in Melbourne. The camp is designed to allow all students to visit tertiary providers of their choice assisted by staff, and gain information which will help them in the process of making choices about their options beyond Year 12. Students stay in university accommodation and experience university life.
Students involved in the FLOW program have the chance to attend this program which gives students the opportunity to develop their personal and social capabilities, including cooperation, self-esteem and resilience. Outdoor adventure activities and a beautiful natural environment will require students to work together and expand their comfort zones.
Students at the senior campus who study Art will journey to Melbourne for a cultural educational experience. Over the 3 day camp students will visit a varity of the cities amazing Art Scapes.
The fieldwork overnight camp to Marysville is a critical aspect of the Year 11 Unit 1 Geography study design. This camp allows students to research the impacts and management of responses to the Black Saturday bushfires. In Unit 2 of this study, students will spend 2 nights in the centre of Melbourne.
The SGSMP Music Camp gives students from the five participating schools across the region to come together to develop as musicians, play great music, experience adventure camp activities, and make social connections with students from other SGSMP schools. The camp culminates in a concert showcasing what students have learned. This three day camp is held is at the Phillip Island Adventure Resort in Term 3.
Students studying Year 9 Advance undertake a three day, two night camp at Woolamai Surf Life Saving Club to complete their Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC). They will consolidate all their coursework from Term 1 and be formally assessed to obtain this qualification.
All students studying VET Outdoor Recreation (Yr 11 & 12), VCE Outdoor Education (Units 3 & 4) and Year 10 Advance have the opportunity to attend a four day snow camp in the Mount Hotham Alpine Resort in September each year. The camp provides the opportunity for students to complete their VET Competency Units and VCE Outdoor Education Outcomes.
The VET surfing class attends a 3 day camp to further develop and improve their surfing ability and to learn more about the surfing industry. Students take part in surfing at different locations between Torquay and Lorne, the camp also includes a video analysis coaching session with Surfing Vic and entry to the surf museum.
To assist in completing Unit 3 Outdoor and Environmental Studies, students are required to participate in a 3 day Base Camp at Tidal River. Students are required to cooperate in groups, to be self-sufficient and provide all their own camping equipment and meals. Students also participate in the WP Wilderness Boat Cruise to support their understanding of the surrounding Prom environment.
To assist in completing Unit 2 Outdoor and Environmental Studies, students are required to participate in a 3 day hiking camp to Cape Liptrap. Students will be involved in bush walking in the cape Liptrap Coastal Reserve and are required to cooperate in groups, to be self-sufficient and provide all their own camping equipment and meals.
Students in the Sport and Rec Program have the opportunity to participate in a camp to Wilson’s Promontory. The camp includes bushwalking, canoeing, SUP, snorkelling, fishing, sea kayaking, beach games, surfing activities and a 2.5 hour boat trip around the islands of Wilsons Prom.
Bass Coast College offers a broad range of excursions and incursions to enhance the curriculum. Students venture into our local community with wildlife walks, farm visits, beach excursions and tree planting days, as well as participating in incursions such as drama and dance workshops, masterchef challenges, drumming workshops and pathways information sessions amoungst many of the educational experiences.
