Subject description: 

The Year 10 English program seeks to develop students’ skills in, and knowledge of, reading, writing and speaking. Students will read and view a range of texts including; plays, film, novels and media texts. They will use their understanding of characters, themes and symbols to craft analytical and creative responses. During this time, they will get the opportunity to develop skills in proof-reading, drafting and editing for meaning. Year 10 students will also use knowledge of persuasive techniques to deliver an oral presentation to the class, as well as develop their communication skills.

Subject description:

This class will help extend students’ understanding of the different ways in which literary texts are constructed and how authors create meaning with language and structure. Students will also examine the historical and social context of the author, and how it can affect the texts they create. The analytical skills introduced in this course will be valuable foundation for VCE Literature. Students will respond to set texts personally, critically and creativity. This variety of approaches to reading invites questions about the ideas and concerns of the text.

Subject description:

This is an extension English elective, students must still complete English as part of the Year 10 program. Although it builds on work in Semester 1, it can be completed without the Semester 1 course. 

Students will examine how authors create meaning with language and structure. Students will also learn to produce an interpretation of a text using different literary perspectives to inform their own view. Furthermore, students will investigate ways in which writers portray attitudes within a social context and how the reader interprets the text.

Subject description:

This subject is aimed at learning about the surfing industry, developing personal surfing skills and gaining nationally recognised qualifications. These qualifications include SRC (Bronze Medallion) and Level II First Aid. Students will have the option to do further study to complete the Level I Surf Coach. Students will complete a Certificate III in Sport and Recreation (Surfing) and will also be required to complete a work experience component for a full completion of the course.

Subject description:

This subject provides students with the opportunity to develop teamwork and team building skills, leadership and initiative, community service responsibilities and accredited skill development in Surf Life Saving (Bronze Medallion) and Level II First Aid. Students will have to attend the Bronze camp as part of this subject. Students will also complete the Certificate III in Sport and Recreation which is an industry recognised qualification. Some of the practical elements of the course include mountain biking, surfing, snorkelling, canoeing and rock climbing.

Subject description:

Take a step back in time to look at what has shaped Australia’s culture and identity. In this subject you will study the history of the modern world and Australia from 1918 to the present. The twentieth century became a critical period in Australia’s social, cultural, economic and political development. In this subject you will analyse the causes and effects of World War II and the way these shaped the Australian identity. 1945 onwards saw significant social change in society. We will examine the impacts of the civil rights movement both globally and locally with a focus on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people’s rights.

Food for Life focuses on advancing existing knowledge of foods and gives students an insight into VCE Food Studies. Subject description: 

Students will investigate contemporary design and use the design process to create a new design for a tiny house. Students will learn how to think creatively and visualise ideas. Students will sketch, make 3D models and use digital drawing methods to create final presentations. The design process will put into practice creative and critical design thinking strategies that will be used to respond to a brief. Final presentations will consist of digitally drawn plans and elevations, and a planometric drawing. The skills learnt in this subject would lean towards a career in Architecture, Building, Landscape Design, Industrial Design, Communication Design and Graphic Design. Design thinking skills are highly valued in a wide range in industries.

In this subject, students develop an appreciation of dance through exploring and analysing a famous dance work.  They explore and express to communicate their own ideas through dance by developing their own dance work through creative problem solving, collaborative skills and a focus on personal movement style.  Students develop their technical and physical dance skills by participating in practical workshops, learning and performing choreography by others.  Students explore a variety of dance styles, including hip hop, jazz, contemporary and culturally diverse dances including Australian Torres Strait Islander Dance. Subject description: 

In Year 10 Drama, students are involved in a series of practical workshops through which they explore the dramatic elements, performance and expressive skills. Students identify and apply play-making techniques to develop and enhance their own drama works. They develop performances in small group and individually, which they script, direct and perform. They also review and evaluate their own and others performances, offering constructive feedback to develop their drama language.

Each term will culminate in a performance with students assuming responsibility for creating, performing and producing a naturalistic play and a devised eclectic ensemble. They will also be required to write an analysis of a professional performance.

Subject description: 

This course aims to give students a taste of Media Studies and teach them some of the theoretical and practical skills required for the creation of short films. The course aims to develop film making skills. Students will complete a film study and analysis of how meaning is constructed in film. The course aims to develop a range of practical media skills including storyboarding, plot development, video camera technique, audio recording, video and audio editing. Much of the content is ‘hands on’. Students will be required to work on smaller group exercises and develop a production in a collaborative manner.

In Mixed Media Sculpture, students will explore a variety of traditional and contemporary sculpture artists, techniques, mediums and artworks. Subject description: 

Music is centred on students putting on an evening gig that they choose songs for, rehearse, promote and stage manage.  All students are expected to perform.  To achieve this, students need to own an instrument. For beginners, guitar is recommended. Students learn strategies for writing and arranging songs for class bands. Students also listen to and analyse music in a variety of styles and study basic music theory, including notation and patterns on the guitar neck.  Basic audio production is also taught, including setting up a PA. This subject is open to any student interested in performing music, whatever level of playing they enter at.  This subject may run combined with VCE Music 1&2 and/or VCE Music Inquiry.

Subject description: 

Music Plus is for students who have significant experience on their instrument or voice, typically supported by instrumental music lessons from the SGSMP or an external provider.  Classical musicians should be at least at AMEB Grade 3 standard and contemporary musicians should already have substantial performance experience.  Students prepare a solo and/or group performance on their instrument/voice at a public recital.  Students develop strategies for effective practise and rehearsal and develop instrumental/vocal technique.  Notation, aural skills and music analysis is taught at a level to prepare students for VCE Music Performance and tertiary music pathways.  Students also compose music using music notation.  Reading and writing basic rhythm and pitch notation is assumed knowledge in this subject.  This subject may run combined with VCE Music 1&2 (Advanced) and/or VCE Music Performance 3&4.

Subject description: 

Students will learn the fundamentals of using DSLR. These skills will be used with the creative process to produce individual photographic artworks. Students will develop an understanding of the exposure triangle, depth of field and composition. The students will use DSLR cameras to practice the skills taught to create photographs that will be printed on our state of the art large format Epson Sure Colour 6070 inkjet printer. Students will learn how to develop creative ideas, use a DSLR and specialised software to enhance their ideas and create final artworks for exhibiting.
